Light Shines in the Darkness
STORIES FROM THE FIELD
Empart social workers are very engaged in their local communities. Luthar is working in his poor community which lacks necessities such as schools and education, clean water, roads and electricity. Many villagers follow different religious practices and superstitions. The pressures of life and the continuous poverty has had a deep impact on people’s lives and there is a high level of alcoholism in this community.
Life without God
Philip* also lived his life indulging in worldly pursuits. Both Philip and his wife were addicted to alcohol and were quickly sinking into darkness and hopelessness. Philip’s wife eventually died from the excessive drinking.
Philip had heard about the living God before, but was forbidden by his family to speak about it. He continued in his hopelessness and grieved the loss of his wife.
The beginning of a new life
Life changed for Philip when he had an opportunity to watch a film about the life of a loving God. As he watched, he became convinced about the true love of God and turned away from his messed up, sinful life. He made a decision to start a new journey and a completely new life with God. His life radically changed.
Philip started attending Empart gatherings led by one of the social workers. Despite continued discouragement from his children about his new life, he continued to pursue God. “After knowing God, my life is more peaceful. My children are still against me and worship their gods, but I feel encouraged and the Empart workers are helping me to grow closer to God daily.”
